Frankincense serrata, also known as Indian Frankincense or Salai, comes from the Boswellia serrata tree. This tree is a member of the Burseraceae family and is native to the arid mountainous regions of India, Northern Africa, and the Middle East.

Appearance: Boswellia serrata is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 2-8 meters in height. It has thin, peeling bark that's papery and ash-colored with a pinkish hue underneath. Its leaves are like fern fronds, delicate and feathery, grouped in threes at the ends of branches.

Resin Production: The resin, which eventually becomes frankincense, is extracted by making incisions into the tree's trunk. The milky-white sap that seeps out hardens upon contact with air, forming droplets or "tears." These are collected and then processed to produce frankincense.

Environment: The Boswellia serrata tree is adapted to thrive in tough environmental conditions. It's commonly found in rocky, dry, and nutrient-poor soils where few other plants can survive. Its resilience is also seen in its ability to withstand grazing and fire.
