Chemical Components

• Hyperforin: This is one of the primary active constituents of St. John's Wort. Hyperforin is thought to have antidepressant properties, among others.
• Adhyperforin: This compound is closely related to hyperforin and shares many of its properties.
• Hypericin: This compound, along with pseudohypericin, is responsible for the red color of the oil. Hypericin is known to have antiviral properties.
• Pseudohypericin: This compound is closely related to hypericin and shares many of its properties.
• Flavonoids: St. John's Wort contains a number of different flavonoids, which are a group of plant metabolites thought to provide health benefits through cell signaling pathways and antioxidant effects. These include compounds such as rutin, quercetin, and luteolin.
• Essential oils chemical constituents:  These volatile oils can have various therapeutic effects. They also contribute to the aroma of the St. John's Wort oil.
• Tannins: These are astringent compounds that are present in many plants.
• Phenolic acids: These include chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid, among others.
